Bubble Bobble NES Review

Now it is the beginning of a fantastic story!!! Let us make a journey to the cave of monsters!!! Good Luck!!! So starts the Bubble Bobble NES game. One of the few early games on the NES whose two player mode has the players playing simultaneously.

You play as one of the Bubble Dragon twins, Bub or Bob, out to rescue their respective girlfriends from a ton of wind-up toasters (which remind me of the wall-e robot). And one of the hardest bosses in the entire gaming kingdom, Super Drunk, yes that is his name.

There are a hundred different levels in this game that you need to go through. Yes people. You heard me right a hundred. Good thing that you could restart at which level you stopped by entering a password given at the "game over" screen.

You kill the robots, monsters and ghosts by shooting them with bubbles you blow from your mouth. After they are trapped inside you must quickly burst the bubble or else the robot, monster or ghost will turn into an "angry" version of themselves, they will turn pink and become a lot faster. The enemies turn into vegetables which give you bonus points.

If the game thinks that you are taking too long to finish a level. It will unleash the dreaded Baron Von Blubber. Baron Von Blubber looks like an undead version of the normal blue-purple whales you've already seen; only this one is a lot meaner. He starts off slowly coming at you, going right through walls and other obstacles with ease. And then he gets faster. And faster. He can't be killed at all. The only way to escape him is to hurry up and kill the remaining enemies before he catches and kills you.

Good thing there are a lot of power ups to help you along the way. Candies give you the power to shoot bubble rapid fire. Shoes make you move faster and jump higher. There are also elemental bubbles that can rain fire or lightning and unleash floods against your enemies. The best thing about these power ups is that they stack each other. So you will not lose one power up by picking up another.

There is also a cuteness factor in the game. How could you stop playing the game when your characters are as cute as the Bubble Dragon twins? Or until you have defeated the obviously alcoholic Super Drunk? So get moving and rescue the dragons in distress.

You can order Bubble Bobble on NES here.
