Spectacular Spider-Man #6

The Spectacular Spider-Man #6 has some great special guests. The cover features Morbius, Spider-Man and The Human torch. The Torch, one fourth of the Fantastic Four, flies into this cover in flames, as Spider-Man is swooping into Morbius, in this classic reprinting of an adventure previously written about in Marvel Team Up #3. Thing, Mister Fantastic, Invisible Girl, Martine (Morbius' Love Interest) also show up in this classic comic book. Often times, in the old days, new material wasn’t necessarily ready to print so the comic book company would throw up an older story and reprint it. I’ve always been a big fan of Vampire tales, and Morbius clashing with Spider-Man makes for quite the crossover into a story a bit more Macabre than people are used to. Specifically these modern times that has Spider-Man and Mary Jane in 2008, creating a somewhat flowery version of what sometimes is more serious. I could be stretching too far, and so I’ll just stop. Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #6 has a good line up of artists and writers, the team comprised of: Writer Gerry Conway, Artist Ross Andru, Inker Frank Giacoia, Cover Ross Andru, Lettering Artie Simek, Colorist Stan Goldberg, Editor Archie Goodwin.

As a bonus, here’s the Cover of Marvel Team Up #3, a 20 cent cover charge is shown, and different artwork is featured.



Hey, sometimes art doesn’t come out as quickly as you’d want it to, and Marvel seemed to understand that. Also, how many people in the 70’s actually owned Marvel Team up #3? I’m not sure. A reprint is nice though, especially in times where the internet didn’t rule the world. The story is cut from 21 pages to 17 pages, and helped re-introduce Morbius as a villain, who would be featured in the next issue of Spectacular Spider-Man.

Spectacular Spider-Man #5

Issue #5 of The Spectacular Spider-Man features Spidey in a very odd situation. Will The Vulture get him? Will The Hitman kill him? We see two sides of the comic book villain here. One a powerful suit wearing bird like character, and the other a gun wielding mercenary. Good and Evil is juxtaposed in this issue with The Vulture saving Spider-Man from his ultimate demise as The Hitman surely was going to get the better of this fight. The Vulture is somewhat selfish in his portrayal of a villain, as he saves Spider-Man only because he wants to kill him. The Hitman, as you might know, is somewhat parallel to The Punisher, as he served in the same Vietnam troop as Frank Castle. The cover doesn’t give you incite into the story, but you’re definitely hoping for a brighter future, as Spider-Man looks to be on the losing end of this one. The team of artists that brought you this comic are: Writer Archie Goodwin, Artist Sal Buscema, Inker Mike Esposito, Cover Dave Cockrum, Lettering Denise Wohl, Colorist Janice Cohen, Editor Archie Goodwin, presenting another classic issue of Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Spectacular Spider-Man #4

Spectacular Spider-Man #4 is today's comic book cover and it is a nice looking damsel in distress cover. The Vulture, the flying villain and mainstay in the Sinister Six and even the Sinister Twelve, comes into the frame to challenge Spiderman's wit and experience. This issue came out in March of 1976 and once again brought back a Spiderman mainstay villain, the Vulture. I never really got the whole Vulture character considering he is just using a suit that gives him powers not really a radioactive villain or mutant. He's a good fighter, but he's essentially just wearing a suit. Granted he poses quite the threat and Spiderman is pushed to the limits yet again. The writers and artists are WRiter/Editor Archie Goodwin, Sal Buscema Penciler, Mike Sposito Inker,Karen Mantlo Letterer, Cohen & Sev Colorist, and provide a nice looking cover and interior comic.

Spectacular Spider-Man #3

This morning we continue our trek through Spectacular Spider-Man with Spectacular Spider-Man #3, and Spider-Man encounters The Lightmaster! The Lightmaster is a physics professor and vice-chancellor of Empire State University, and turns bad when budget cuts cause hardships at the university. Spider-Man inadvertently causes Lightmaster to become a super villain who must depend on light to gain power. Kraven also shows up in this one, continuing his venture in Spiderman's circle of super villains. Sal Buscema is the artist on this cover, and he draws quite the scene, with The Lightmaster casting Spiderman through the frame with his brightness. I wonder if Sal Buscema was a christian at the time, as he is now, because the being is almost like a reference or portrait of God who is sometimes described as faceless. I'm not sure.

Spectacular Spider-Man #2

The best part of the second issue of Spectacular Spider-Man is the fact that the marquee reads "Omen" which is definitely a great thumbs up for me, a horror fan, about the film "The Omen". It could work out well considering that "The Omen" was released in 1976 and then re-released in December of 76' as well. So the time line works for a January issue of Spectacular Spider-Man, and it's our pick for today. Kraven shows up to try and entangle Spiderman, who doesn't want to kill the web slinger, he simply wants to prove that he's the greatest hunter in the world.

I remember looking on ebay and finding that Spectacular Spider-Man #1 was easily found. In fact you can get the whole collection of Spectacular Spider-Man for a low price. I'm not sure why, but this set of comics started in the 70's is not exactly the biggest favorite amongst comic book fans. I plan on buying every issue, as soon as I can afford it.

Carl Shipman Signs With Stereo

One of the coolest things about Stereo Skateboards is that they send me news, so here is what they emailed me:

Carl was an integral part in making Stereo what it is today and we are happy to see him back in action and ready to join the Agency once again. Look for Carl's Stereo reissue board, which will be out within the next month in the Fall/Winter 08 catalog.
